Dear Shirley and family,
Please accept my deepest condolences on the loss of your husband, sibling, father and grandfather. I had the pleasure to work as a student with John at the Great Lakes Forestry Research Centre in the late 1970s and early 80s. I recall fondly our times together doing field work. John immediately impressed me with his knowledge of plants. Living in the field for many weeks each year, we came to know one another well. John and Shirley were kind enough to offer me a place for the night at their home when I was later passing through the Soo.
Those who are dead are never gone. They will live forever in wood that groans, in the water that sleeps.
