Obituary of Joan DeGroot

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and aunt. Joan DeGroot, of Kettle Point, passed away at University Hospital, London on Sunday, December 28, 2025 at the age of 72. She was the daughter of the late Leo and Theresa Kelly (née Whaling).

Joan was the devoted wife of Jack DeGroot, and a loving mother to Bill Krantz (Laurie), Kelly Krantz (Farron Joseph / “Meemer”), Joshua DeGroot (Chris Regier), Joseph DeGroot (Riddhi Vora), and adopted mother of Ashley DeGroot (Greysky Bressette). She was a cherished sister of Jane Kelly (Brad Flood) and was predeceased by her sister Beth Young (Steve).

Joan will be deeply missed by her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, all of whom she loved fiercely and unconditionally.

She was also predeceased by an infant son and her nephew Chris. Joan had a deep love for animals and shared a special bond with her dogs, Zoey (predeceased) and Mia, who brought her constant companionship and comfort.

Joan loved nothing more than being surrounded by family, and she expressed that love by opening her home and hosting countless family gatherings. Her favorite time of year was Christmas, a season she truly made magical. Decorating the Christmas tree was a cherished tradition, and she especially loved having high ceilings—because to her, it simply meant a bigger tree. Those moments of togetherness, laughter, and holiday joy were where she was happiest, and they will be remembered fondly by all who shared them with her. Her children will proudly carry on these Christmas traditions, honoring her memory by continuing the warmth, joy, and togetherness she created year after year.

Joan found joy in life’s simple comforts. She loved knitting, gardening, and watching heartfelt movies/television shows. She enjoyed quiet moments playing solitaire/euchre and, just as much, long conversations and chatting with those she loved.

Joan’s life was defined by her kindness, her laughter, and her unwavering devotion to the people she loved. She loved deeply, listened intently, and showed her care in countless small, thoughtful ways. Her warmth, kindness, and steady presence will be profoundly missed and forever remembered by those who were fortunate enough to know her.

As per Joan’s request, cremation has taken place and her ashes will be interred in St. Marys Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Stratford Army and Navy, 151 Lorne Avenue East, Stratford, on January 10, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Canadian Lung Association, or Lung Health Foundation (Canada) would be appreciated by the family.
