Obituary of Laura Ruby Smythe
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother and grandmother on January 10, 2026, at St Marys Memorial Hospital, St. Marys, Ontario at the age of 82. The daughter of the late Herbert MacDonald and Ruby (nee Hammill). Laura was born on a modest family farm in Dracon, West Garafraxa Twp., Ontario, where her early years were shaped by the discipline and determination of rural life. Her family operated the farm without electricity or running water- an experience that instilled in her a profound resilience and a strong work ethic.
Laura married Don Smythe on January 26,1963 and commenced their life together. The family travelled the world throughout Don’s military career, living in many places including Germany and Bermuda. They retired to London then St. Marys.
Laura quickly and efficiently embraced the life of a military spouse. She ensured her family was well cared for with generous sprinkles of quick wit and humour.
Laura enjoyed games, darts, pepper, dominos, golf, bowling and knitting. Always competitive, it was hard to find someone, other than Don, who could compliment her game. Laura and Don travelled extensively in retirement on numerous cruises and trips abroad. In later years they sheltered from the Canadian winters in Mazatlán, Mexico.
She is survived by her husband, Don, son Russell (Kim) and daughter Diane McGall (David).
She also leaves behind her loving grandchildren, Sarah and Matthew McGall who were her pride and joy. She and Don were actively involved in their upbringing and activities - spending many hours cheering them on in their hockey journeys.
She is also survived by her brother Edgar (Doris). She is predeceased by her sister Florence and brothers Ray, Lloyd and Bill.
Laura expressed that she had enjoyed her life immensely and felt she had done everything she desired. She was an amazing woman and we loved her dearly.
Special thanks to all the wonderful healthcare staff that made Laura’s final journey complete with support, compassion and comfort.
Cremation to take place. No public funeral service will be held.
Donations in memory of Laura may be made to the St Marys Healthcare Foundation or the Arthritis Society Canada.
