For years working as Doug’s Associate advisor at RBC Dominion Securities in Woodstock after Richardson Greenshields was bought was the fondest stretch of my career. He was kind, funny, intuitive, a great listener and brilliant. He spoke of his most proud achievement every day. His children. Doug taught me the business of investing/trading futures and help set me on the path for the rest of my career. I am a far better person for having known Doug. My most sincere condolences to Barb and Doug’s children on this colossal loss.

Dear Barb and all of the family...such a large loss to embrace and then fill with all the energy and love Doug brought to this life. He was such a force of positive energy, most times the smartest person in the room yet he never made anyone feel that. Generous with his time (This is a huge legacy) with his knowledge. And with his spirit. Deepest thoughts. Cathy Jones. A pleasure to have had the chance to work with him.

Hello Barb and all of the family. When we moved into 106 Wellington we were greeted by Doug - a man willing to share all the ins and outs of this historic home we are now the stewards of. Doug was so kind and helpful to us and even came to visit a few times when he passed by. We felt very close to both Barb and Doug, because we were living in their house and have so much of their furniture that we use every day. We watched the building of the new house across the river and rejoiced when it was finally built and we could see that the new occupants were home at last. Doug's kindness was spoken of so often by the neighbours on the hill here. Barb, it was a great pleasure to meet you at Nicole's last year. It was lovely to put a face to your name and get to know the other half of the Hollidays. Jonathan and I are so shocked and sorry to hear of Doug's passing. He will be greatly missed. 106 will always be the Holliday house in our minds.Yours in deepest sympathy,
Janet Martin and Jonathan Ross

Our sincerest condolences to Barb and the families. I've known Doug since earliest days at DCVI and shared classes several years. We were part of a group of friends at school, outside school and that continues to exist today. Doug's determination for education post secondary was a successful tribute to his true character. Often on a Sunday morning I would catch him on Ross Dailey's show providing his view on various agricultural financial matters. Later I would occasionally catch a message or interview in the local paper representing the St. Marys Healthcare Foundation.
You came a long way from our early days in high school Doug and did everyone proud. Rest in peace Dog!

Sympathy does not cover a person of Doug's calibre and stature as he would always be remembered
by his family and treasured in thoughts held forever by his friends who were touched by him.
Doug was a great friend and an even greater neighbour but better a strong contributor
to his community, and best, a family man.
He would speak with pride of the accomplishments of his children and with love
for his grandchildren. His eyes with well up softly describing their stories ... and all conversations
would include that infectious laugh.
Doug was the most successful financial advisor/broker in St. Marys history AND an unbelievable example
of someone who supports his community. He didn't need to talk, he did the walk.
A further remarkable thing about Doug was he never ever spoke in negative terms about anyone.
Worse maybe a blank look on the mention of a name, and a chuckle.
One of my favourite qualities he exhibited in spades was Doug was a humble person
never ever promoting himself, his many successes except of course the accomplishments of his family.
My favourite story about Doug is not known by many which reflects his humble nature.
When the St. Marys Hospital Foundation looked to build a community clinic and gym
in the 90s Doug was given (I was told) 4.3 million to invest. He invested it all in NORTEL
(Aaaaaah for those who remember the stock). He doubled up the investment and gave
the Foundation back the proceeds.
My understanding is that this covered the cost of the Y and Clinic, an achievement in my mind's eye
that has never been equaled in St. Marys 'giving' history.
There have been many successful St. Marys citizens who have given nothing back to their community, while others
who insist on signage, a photo in the newspaper to promote their donation ... remember Doug was humble.
Humble enough to help with coffee hour at the United Church on Tuesdays spending time
in conversation with those on their own or in need of a little attention.
Let;'s not forget Doug was a can-do person: Welder, carpenter, furniture maker, landscaper, gardener, art/antique collector,
auction addict, car enthusiast, golfer, paper hanger, sculpture maker, listener, and banged on a set of drums...
... a super interesting person that I will cherish
in my memories and miss deeply.
Thank you Doug for just being Doug ( you can add a little chuckle at this thought).
