Obituary of Betty Florene Luther

Betty Florene Luther (nee Gray) passed peacefully at Cedarcroft Place Retirement Residence on July 27, 2026 in her 93rd year. 

Betty was born in Fort Frances on December 16, 1933, and her family moved to Thunder Bay (Port Arthur) when she was a young girl. It was here at the age of 9 where she met Laverne Michael Luther (predeceased) who would become the love of her life. They were married for 70 years, building a love filled life together and proudly raising five children; Cathee Edwards (Geoff), Martin (Edie), Paul (Sandi), Douglas (predeceased) and Cheryl Simmons (Doug). She is dearly loved by her grandchildren Kim (Mike), Thomas (Lauren), Annie (Tom), Daniel (Megan), Alex (Thamiraa), Caitlin (Jeff), Taylor, Connor (Michelle), Graydon (Ashley) as well as her eight great-grandchildren. Memories of Betty will be cherished by her sister Lorna (Bill), brother Wilfred (Jackie) and her many nieces and nephews. Betty was predeceased by sisters Hazel (Bob) and June (Jack).

Betty attended PACI High School where she excelled in athletics and academics. She was an accomplished pianist who achieved her Grade 10 level examinations. Post graduation, she attended the Nursing Program at the Port Arthur General Hospital and subsequently enjoyed a long successful career in Obstetrics with her last number of years as Nurse Manager at Woodstock General Hospital. In her spare time, she was an avid bridge player and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. 

Betty will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her. The family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to Better Ways for Seniors Ltd. and Cedarcroft Place Retirement Residence for their excellent care and compassion over the years. 

A private family service will be held at a later date. Betty will be laid to rest at the National Military Cemetery (Beechwood) in Ottawa with her beloved husband Laverne.
