Andrew Seale posted a condolence
To me, Chum was a slow rolling white Buick you could spot from a half kilometre away. CHUM, we all know the license plate but forgive me if it wasn't Buick, I was a kid pumping gas on HWY 7 and after a couple years it's not the make, it's the shape you look for, and those contours meant it was time to slip the deck of cards behind the counter or toss the frisbee under the propane tank. Not that Chum minded. He rolled in slow. Looped around the back and parked between the race fuel and the warehouse. He gave us time to look official, to fit the post we were entrusted with at the kiosk on HWY 7. After parking, he'd begin the slow walk across the lot to where we waited. A decade and a half later, I don't remember any words exchanged, just the smile and a few chuckles, the lean on the counter looking out across the field or down the highway. We did exchange words of course. He knew my grandpa KC and grandmother Eleanor, he loved them both. About the car, dad says he told my grandfather Cadillacs were "show-y" – maybe he did, maybe he didn't. But we hid the cards and the frisbee not because we were afraid of Chum but because we respected him and we wanted him to respect us. I'm certain he did. Everything I knew about him then and now tells me that's the kind of man he was. It's a simple memory of a place that played a big role in some of my teenage years, a place that Chum built. I'm certain the town is full of these memories of Chum. He will be missed. My condolences to the Hammond family.

Mrs. Hammond (Editha) and family, We are so saddened to hear of Chum's passing. He was an iconic man from his service to his country, community and the love he had for his family. Chum and Editha were very dear friends to KC and Eleanor and their family. He employed both our sons through their high school and college years. We had the privilege over the years to chat many times with Chum reminiscing about times gone buy. A true gentleman who will be missed by all.
