Obituary of Winifred Ann Maciver

Winifred Ann Maciver, 95, November 2, 2016 peacefully at Kingsway Lodge, St. Marys, Ontario.Winnie was the beloved wife of Donald Maciver (2009) for 61 years. Cherished mother of Angus (Janice) and Lesley (Mark Bennett 2000). Loving Nana to Allison Maciver (Marty), Calum Maciver (Ruby), Ian Maciver and Graydon Bennett. Great grandmother to Alistair and Ariya Maciver . Survived by nephews and nieces both in Scotland and Canada. Predeceased by parents Alexander Robertson Stark and Winifred (Arnot) Stark.Born in Dundee, Scotland, Winnie grew up in Glasgow. When she left school, she was employed as a secretary until she served in the Women’s Land Army throughout World War II. Winnie married Donald, in 1948. In 1955, with their children they immigrated to Canada and settled in St. Marys where Donald taught at St. Marys DCVI. Winnie worked outside the home as well, enjoying many activities with friends and neighbours. Winnie was an avid curler, bridge player, cryptic crossword solver, and especially enjoyed music. She played the piano every day as long as she was able. In June of this year, Winnie treated the guests at her 95th birthday luncheon to some of her favourite tunes, at the grand piano at Fairhill Residence. Family camping trips were always made more joyful with Winnie playing the ukulele around the campfire. She was an extremely hard worker, volunteering as Sunday school teacher, service with the IODE, Hospital auxiliary, amongst other community activities. Winnie and Donald were fortunate to have enjoyed many years of travel. In retirement, they made several trips to Italy, Greece, Bermuda, Myrtle Beach as well as cruises in both the Mediterranean and Caribbean. The family is grateful for the excellent care she received in her later years. Thanks to Dr. Tania Wilson, Dr. Susan Hiscock and Dr. James Hiscock in looking after Winnie. The kindness and attention she received from the nursing staff during her visits to St. Marys Memorial Hospital is so very much appreciated. We especially thank the staff at Kingsway Lodge for all that they provided. Winnie could not have been better cared for.Cremation has taken place. An open house memorial gathering will take place in the atrium of the ST. MARYS PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 147 Widder St. E., St. Marys, on Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2016 from 2 - 4 p.m.In lieu of flowers, donations to the St. Marys Memorial Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.
