Karen and family Our condolence on the passing of Peter. He was my Dr. From the time he came to St marys i lived in Exeter and now in Listowel. I always had to wait for my appointment the clinic would call me and say come down in a hour ,I still had to wait but he took his time and was never in a rush when it was my turn but i never cared as i was going to see my dr Peter and thats all that mattered. I was once told i should get a diffrent Dr i sayed not a chance. When he told me he was retiring i had tears in my eyes. But he said i would like his replacement and he was right he did a great job in a getting a replacement. I Still missed our chats and visits. Peter you will be missed by so many people and family. Karen, Family and Peter's close friends: Peter was my doctor for 30 years up until his retirement. When he came to St. Marys, he was truly a "breath of cold air" that was needed in the medical establishment here. His favorite stories included the night that "Office Gus" from the St. Marys Police Force was foot patrolling past the former medical clinic on Church Street, spied Peter looking at the medical files through the window. Peter steadfastly refused to wear the white shirt and black tie that was the standard doctor's uniform in the early days. He was wearing jeans and a regular shirt from Day 1 and truly started the "informal" trend at the clinic. Along with Peter's beard, that was enough to send Officer Gus into the clinic to question Peter on what he was doing there. Peter told that story a lot, laughing away. One of my favorite memories of Peter is the fact that even though I was technically supposed to see Peter at 5 p.m. for an appointment at the clinic, I got to understand that it really meant I would see him at 8 p.m. The receptionist would lock us all in at 6 p.m., we would all look at each other, then settle down with our book (my knitting), etc. to wait. It was understood that Peter cared very deeply about his care for his patients, especially counseling, which he excelled at, and usually every patient got an hour of his time, something unheard of now. Peter was a local treasure, unique in his devotion to patients and community service. He truly "marched to the beat of his own drummer". We will never see his like again. Through my sadness at his passing, I will be at the Pyramid Center for his remembrance party with bells on. Family, friends, former colleagues, may your loving memories of time spent with Peter give all of you comfort during this difficult time. God speed, Peter, and thank you for everything - well done!

It is with shock and sadness I send our deepest condolences. Peter was my families, and my family doctor for most of his career in St. Marys. He was truly missed when he retired. He was kind, patient, caring and funny. I enjoyed hearing his stories of his vacations and seeing his pictures he took of nature that he loved. He always had a smile and took the time to listen. I have known Peter since ~ age 5 when we met at Camp White Bear at Temagami and spent the next 10 years having a "Tom Sawyer" summer doing many crazy activities and stunts. Thankfully no one suffered major injuries and most of us campers went on to rather respectable careers. Our father's were partners in London Xray associates including St. Joseph's hospital. Peter ended up essentially running the camp for Ron J. into his early 20's and carried a love of Lake Temagami his entire life . For the last 25 years we have reminisced at the yearly OMA curling bonspiel where Peter and his team won a few games but certainly had the most fun !! Every year I was greeted by "Hi Wo Wo" with a big kiss on both cheeks. Peter made up nicknames for all of his camp buddies that we carried throughout our lives A great man, memorable in so many ways and a friend for life Dr. Warren Wilkins Peterborough

Dear Karen We were saddened to learn of Peter's passing. I have such fond memories of his amazing personality from some of the Humphrys picnics. I know he and Craig had lots of laughs at the 2018 picnic. I think one of my favourite Peter stories that seems to represent his joy of life and finding fun was at family was a picnic several years ago at Marty and Jane's. Peter pulled up in your car with the radio blaring "Born to Be Wild'...what a laugh and entrance he made. I still chuckle at that story and since that time, every time I hear that song...I think of him...and always will. I know how much he loved you,all your the kids and grandkids. He was a wonderful role model in working hard yet taking time to 'be' with his family in nature or wherever. He will be missed. All our love, Reen and Craig

Karen and Family, My condolences to you all in this difficult time. I had the privilege of taking over Peter's practice in 2015, and I sure had big shoes to fill. Peter had an extremely special bond with his patients, and was truly one of a kind. I am so grateful that he allowed me to "inherit" his practice when he retired, and I hope that I have a long and happy career in St. Marys as he did. I continue to enjoy hearing stories about Peter- the many babies he delivered, him dancing in the parade, the way he talked to kids, him running hours behind, the many travel pictures in his office- but most of all the devotion he had to his patients. I have really enjoyed getting to know Peter over the last 5 years, as he continued to come to Christmas parties and golf outings. He is a true legend in St. Marys, and he will be missed by everyone.

When I was around 8, Dr Johnston fit me in for a bad case of swimmers ear. He wore a swim cap into the room and my mom and I laughed and laughed. My mom has since passed, so this is a special memory for me. When I was 16, Dr Johnston saw me to give me 9 stitches in my hand after I cut it by accident in shop class. We traded so many jokes during the procedure that I left grinning ear to ear. Dr Johnston is one of the main reasons I went into the medical field. There is room for humour and genuine compassion in the medical field, and Dr Johnston showed me this. I truly do model my own care with patients after the care that he showed me. Please know that this man’s kindness and intelligence is rare and it was so appreciated.

Peter loved a parade not just a march along the route, he led there as in life and I loved to follow the adventure. Thank you Peter. Peter was a rare doctor who made house calls, made himself available with his time to straighten us out, took his time to join a service club and was one of the only doctors who can be seen on a daily basis picking ip his mail. Peter was real St. Marys.

Dear Karen and family. We were saddened to hear of Peter's passing. Our hearts go out to you all. Peter was our doctor for many years. He was an incredibly wise man with the easiest of bedside manners. We would often compare "war" stories from our respective childhoods and giggle ourselves silly at the antics we got away with as children living in big cities...Peter in London and hubby and I in Toronto. Quite often he would share "Dr. Pete's quotes and wisdoms" with us and sometimes write them down on a scrap of paper for us to tuck away in our pockets. His family photo wall of pride, which he maintained in his office, was often the source of many interesting stories. Truly, he was a great story teller. We've missed him dearly since his retirement. From time to time we'd run into him at the post office or the grocery store and he always took time to chat with us. He was very much an original. He will be missed. Pam and Bill McGirr
