Obituary of Donald Allan Stevens

Donald Allan Stevens died peacefully at the St. Marys Memorial Hospital on Saturday, February 8, 2020 surrounded by his loving family.Don was born and raised in St. Marys, Ontario and was the 5th generation of his family to carry on the family farm. He and his wife Leita proudly owned and operated Stonetown Farms where they pursued their passion of breeding quality purebred Holstein cattle. Don was awarded Holstein Canada’s highest honor of Master Breeder in 1983 and was highly respected throughout North America for his prominent dairy herd.He is predeceased by the love of his life Leita Stevens (McKay), married for 45 years, parents David Richard and Madge Stevens and will be dearly missed by his three daughters, Sherry (Dan) Daum, Sheila (Marc) Cameron and Sandy (Scott) Shackleton all of St. Marys. His grandchildren Brock and Lily Daum, Lauren and Julia Cameron, and Stacey and Nolan Shackleton.Don will also be missed by his mother-in-law Joyce McKay, sister Jane (Marty) Humphrys, and brothers Jim (Karen) Stevens and John (Ruth) Stevens plus his special nephews Mark Stevens and Matthew Humphrys. Don will also be missed by many other nieces and nephews.Don was a pioneer as a Holstein breeder and developed Horizon Holsteins, one of the first Red and White dairy herds in Canada. He was a director of the Perth County Holstein Club for several years and started the first organized Perth County Holstein club sale with long time friends Dave Packham and Gordon Bell. Don was also an avid snowmobiler and long time member and director of the Science Hill Drifters and enjoyed many years with family and friends at his beloved cottage in Gogama.Cremation has taken place with a private family service.A Celebration of Life Open House will take place on SATURDAY FEBRUARY 15, 2020 at the ST. MARYS GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB, 769 Queen St. East, from 2:00-4:00 PM.
