My name is Marlene Pearce and I knew Norma very well at London Teachers College where we studied together for two years. I was from Woodstock and she stayed with me when we did our student teaching in Woodstock. I have fond memories of our time spent together. It was interesting to read about Norma as our lives seemed to have followed similar paths. I moved to Moncton NB several years ago and also owned my own decorating business. Hello to everyone in the Hiscock Family - our very sincere condolences to all of you; we knew both Jim and Norma as lovely, lovely next door neighbours. The first day we moved in we received a wonderful bouquet of flowers and very welcoming card. They were definitely a kind presence and shared many funny stories of raising children (as they listened to ours develop their taste in music over the years! ) We have good memories of shared conversations and meals. Nancy & Lorne Eedy posted a condolence
There are so many things to say about Norma Hiscock that I will limit my impression to her work on heritage preservation where she was the first lady of colour in St. Marys. Norma did tasteful design but she excelled with the palate. House, office, the bathroom or the bed room, even the garden or pool shed, Norma set the high bar on the stage of taste and design. To the complete benefit of her adopted community, Norma became a devout heritage convert putting her support in motion as a founding member of the Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee (LACAC) later simplified to Heritage St. Marys. Norma was our colour expert. Many heritage home and building owners can attest to this day her choice and blend to achieve just the right palate. Colours still repeated on many magnificent houses to this day. My honour was to witness these property assessments with Norma on colour, along with Sandy Mclean on masonry, and Larry Pfaff as our historian and architectural expert. A heady crew that would form the SOBs; Save Our Bridge (Victoria Bridge) and helped save the Opera House from becoming a grocery store among their successes. Norma was there through it all, shoulder to shoulder in the fight to save St. Marys for this generation that now enjoys the view. She started with the Opera House, later the Church Street Bridge then the Victoria Bridge, the Green Bridge and the Mill Race all had the special eye of Norma Hiscock. Today the Town can smile at the mill race, point out the Green Bridge or for that matter the Church and Victoria Bridges, marvel at the Opera House. None would be here today if were not for the efforts, conviction, and dedication of people like Norma Hiscock. Nancy & Lorne Eedy PS: My house still carries the palate recommendations of Norma. In fact one colour is Norma grey, while another is Norma yellow.
