Obituary of Richard Hiscocks

Dear friends, I, Fay (Walton) Hiscocks, am deeply saddened to share with you the news of the passing of my dear husband Richard. Rick was born in British Guyana on the 22nd of December 1940. His mother Anne was a Presbyterian deaconess doing missionary work there and his father John worked in the family business. They moved to Canada when Richard was two so John could enlist in the Canadian army during the Second World War. Back in Canada his brothers Ian and James were born.After the war John and Anne was granted a section of land in the PeaceRiver district of northern Alberta. They tried farming with some other officers but gave up after several years of not being able to have a successful harvest. It was there that Rick developed hip perthies which stops the growth of the leg. He was in body casts for several years until the growth restarted. When the casts were removed he was able to walk but was told he would not be able to play sports. Through sheer guts and hard work he proved them wrong. This character trait has remained with him his whole life.He went on to play football throughout high school in Markham and later at the University of Guelph where he graduated with a degree in Agriculture. I met him there in first year and we were married and Graduated four years later in 1965. We both taught high school together at Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute.Eventually Richard decided to go into farming just north of Ingersoll.There we started a family, Stephen in 1970 and Heather in 1972.We farmed hogs and cattle along with cash crop. Richard was active in Ontario Pork Producers, Optimists club and the FCC. He enjoyed public speaking and helping others in the industry succeed.He coached and participated in hockey and baseball in the Embro area.He was a grandfather to Alex, Matthew and Emily who are children of Stephen and Brenda (Heeney) Hiscocks (Innisfail, Alberta) and Mya and Alyce who are the children of Heather (Hiscocks) and Phil Ruthig (St Marys).We retired from farming in 2007 and moved to St Marys.After living with Parkinson’s for 24 years Richard passed away after a brief stay at Hillside Manor in Sebringville. He had wonderful care from many PSW’s and support workers for the last years and moments of his life.We would like to thank everyone who cared for Richard along the way.
