Obituary of William Ivan Weir

With sadness and gratitude for his life, we announce the peaceful passing of William Ivan Weir on March 15 2023. Bill was born February 29 1928 in London ON, the son of the late Mildred (McNiece) and Roy Weir.

He was predeceased in April 1995 by his beloved wife of 44 years Barbara Jessiman Weir (Isaac). He was also predeceased by his brother, the Rev. James Weir.

He was the beloved father of John Weir (Patti Goodwin), Isaac Weir, and Nancy Weir (David McPherson), and cherished grandfather of Leah, Chloe, Sylvie, Keaton (Ana) and Alden.

Bill was a graduate of the University of Guelph receiving his BSc in 1951 and his MSc in 1971. He spent his career as a high school science and biology teacher. After two initial teaching years at Amherstburg High School and Medway High School, Bill taught at Clarke Road Secondary School in London ON until 1986. A two year leave allowed Bill and his family to live in Soest, Germany where he taught for NATO on a Canadian army base (including family travels in Europe).

In 1968, he and Barbara bought a farm at RR3 Thorndale, Ontario where he enjoyed living right up until his passing.

After dreaming of flying all his life, Bill earned his pilot’s license in 1978. He was very involved in the Recreational Aircraft Association.

Bill maintained a life-long passion for life, science, flying, and learning until his passing. His keen intelligence, broad-based knowledge and affable personality and wit made him a well-loved person by all who knew him.

A private funeral service will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church in Harrington ON where Bill will be interred beside Barbara.

A celebration of Bill’s life for all Bill’s friends and family will take place in his hangar on May 27 beginning at 2 pm at his farm (email john@taplinweir.com for details).
