Obituary of Margaret Mary Carter

Margaret Carter

December 20, 1927 - July 21, 2023

Mom came into this world on a stormy winter night in December of 1927, the firstborn to Olive and Mervyn Linton, who farmed in Logan Township, north of Mitchell. Margaret Mary Carter (nee Linton) left us, at the age of 95, on July 21, 2023.

She lived for over 60 years in the same house in St.Marys, raising four children Kathy Blake (John), Bud Carter (Mary Atkinson), Linda Carter (Gordon Barnett) and Jane Bedford. Mom was a Legal Secretary and Title Searcher for Waghorn and Stephens Law firm.

Mom was an excellent homemaker and cook, and loved local history. She read Mary Smith’s column in the Independent, with great interest every week, missing it when her eyesight was failing. Mom was so sharp right up until the end. She could tell us the story of every item of Canadian glass or piece of furniture that Dad had refinished. Mom’s memory was second to none.

She was a private lady who loved her children, her 10 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren with all of her heart. She put such thought into every birthday and Christmas gift, keeping careful track in her little black book, treating each child fairly. She was so proud of them all.

Mom was the keeper of family history, with a large collection of photo albums that she would reference often and lay out for us all to see on the kitchen table. She loved her home, her roses, fine china, linens from Kingsmills, fish and chips and a cold pint.

When Dad and her two younger brothers, Bob and David, passed away as well as most of her friends and neighbours, she often wondered why she had lived so long. She was a role model for all of us. We’ll miss you, Mom.

Cremation has taken place. A private family interment will take place in St. Marys Cemetery at a later date.

Special thanks to those who gave Mom such good care: Aida, Dr. Berta, Dr. Hepburn and Cheryl, and Andrew Hodges. Donations can be made to the
