Obituary of August Victor Van Massenhoven

August “Gus” Victor Van Massenhoven passed away at his home in St. Marys with family at his side on May 10, 2020 at the age of 81.Beloved husband of almost 57 years to Bernardina (nee Meuleman). Forever loved by his children Anna (Melyssa Lipsey) William (Cara), Br. Stephen, Patrick (Kaylene) and Teresa. Proud grandfather of Megan Van Massenhoven (Adam), Emily Young, Kurtis (Danielle), Nicole, Rebecca and Michael Van Massenhoven, Garen and Dayle (Dylan Van Massenhoven, Celeste and Brielle Chartrand and great grandfather of Teagen, Isabel, Scarlett, Ava, Abby, and Aubrey. Also survived by siblings Louis (Pauline), Albert (Elizabeth), and Elizabeth Leyten (Neil).Gus was born in Belgium and immigrated to Canada with his family in 1951. He spent his childhood and youth in the Parkhill area. In 1963 he married the love of his life Bernardina Meuleman and moved to London, Ontario. In 1974, he fulfilled a lifelong dream when he became a police officer for the Town of St. Marys, where the family settled and lived. Gus was known for his sense of humour, his outgoing nature and his sense of honour and fairness. He was a parishioner of Holy Name of Mary Parish and member of the Holy Name of Mary Contemporary Choir for over 30 years. His love for music will live on in his children and grandchildren. Throughout the years, Gus sang, and played guitar and harmonica for his family and friends, and in local bands and choirs. His sense of humour and his ability to share a bad joke with perfect timing will be long remembered by his family and the community that he loved and lived in. His life and memory is a blessing for all of us.The family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Tania Wilson and the VON Care Team.Cremation has taken place. A Funeral Mass will take place at a later date.Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Mental Health Association or the Canadian Cancer Society.On Wednesday, May 11, 2020, at 4 p.m. Br.
